by Nancy Tartaglione

UPDATE, WRITETHRU: The British Independent Film Awards were handed out tonight in London with Francis Lee’s feature debut and festival breakout, God’s Own Country, scooping the Best British Independent Film and three other prizes. A Sundance world premiere and laureate, it stars Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu in a contemporary tale of self-discovery and emotional-awakening set on the sheep farming hills of rural England. The movie from Shudder Films and Inflammable Films also took Best Actor for O’Connor; Debut Screenwriter for Lee and the previously announced Best Sound award.

Lady Macbeth star Florence Pugh was named Best Actress among the film’s five wins. The two previously announced trophies for Cinematography and Costume Design were joined tonight by Best Screenplay honors for Alice Birch and the Most Promising Newcomer prize for Naomie Ackie. William Oldroyd’s feature debut led the nominations going into the night. Pugh plays a young bride sold into marriage and whose innocence is slowly corrupted by her circumstance and yearning to rebel. Last night the film was named European Discovery 2017 at the European Film Awards.

Armando Iannucci’s The Death Of Stalin was also a major winner with four BIFAs including Best Supporting Actor for Simon Russell Beale. And, I Am Not A Witchhelmer Rungano Nyoni won both the Best Debut Director and Best Director prizes. She was a Deadline One to Watch in Cannes this year. The film also took Breakthrough Producer for Emily Morgan.

The BIFAs have increasingly focused on showcasing new talent under the stewardship of co-directors Deena Wallace and Amy Gustin who took over in 2015. On the overseas front, the organization awarded Jordan Peele’s Get Out as Best International Independent Film.
