Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired rights in key
foreign markets to Ricky Gervais’ comedy “Special
Correspondents.”

Protagonist Pictures closed deals at AFM with SPWA for the
U.K., Australia/New Zealand, South Africa, Latin America, Scandinavia and
Eastern Europe.

Gervais will direct from his own script and co-star alongside
Eric Bana.

“Special Correspondents is a remake of the 2009 French comedy
“Envoyes tres speciaux.” It’s slated to start production in New York and
Vancouver in the spring.

Bana will portray a struggling New-York-based radio journalist
whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on
the line, he and his technician (Gervais) create fake frontline war reports
from Manhattan, leading to the duo being forced to sneak into Ecuador and find
the rebels they’ve been covering.

The film is a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous
Entertainment in association with Creative Wealth Media Finance. Producers
are Unanimous’ Chris Coen, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Manuel Munz and Gervais.

Creative Wealth’s Jason Cloth and Larry Sanisky are executive
producers. WME Global is selling domestic and Protagonist is selling
international.

The deal was negotiated by SPWA’s Michael Helfand, Joe
Matukewicz and Jonathan Freedberg, along with Protagonist Pictures’ CEO Mike
Goodridge.
