Released by Picturehouse Cinemas; following sell out screenings for its UK Premiere at the Times BFI London Film Festival; The Lobster opened on Friday 16 October on 75 screens across the UK and Ireland.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ critically acclaimed third feature grossed £229, 000 in its opening weekend including previews, reaching No.9 in the UK box office charts with a £2929 screen average. This marks his English language debut as the director’s most successful feature to date (Dogtooth’s cumulative gross for the UK coming in at £276, 037) and undoubtedly his breakthrough hit which will mark him as an auteur provocateur to watch.
Following an award winning Cannes debut; the film’s UK launch was well received with positive press coverage across TV, Radio and print media. This was bolstered by an innovative marketing campaign which saw Picturehouse running online campaigns across social media outlets including Facebook and twitter and on site activities in their sites including speed dating events paired with a film screening.
The future looks bright for THE LOBSTER on the continent too. Released on Thursday 15 October in Italy by Good Films grossing €119, 952 on its opening weekend from 21092 admissions. The Lobster ranked 5th out of all the new releases opening that weekend with a healthy screen average of €2499.
