Palm Springs Film Fest: ‘Felicite’ Named Best Foreign-Language Film

  •  Felicite, the story of a single mom and nightclub singer in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, received the FIPRESCI Prize for best foreign-language film of the year at the 29th annual Palm Springs Film Festival. The drama, submitted by Sudan, also is on the shortlist for the best foreign-language film Academy Award.

    The fest’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature went to Richard Loncraine’s British romantic comedy Finding Your Feet, while the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature went to Mark Hayes’ Skid Row Marathon.

    The fest, which has screened 180 films from 77 countries and runs through Monday, announced its juried prizes on Saturday.

    The FIPRESCI acting prizes went to Nakhane Toure for South Africa’s The Wound, directed by John Trengrove, and to Daniela Vega for Chile’s A Fantastic Woman, directed by Sebastian Lelio. Both films are also on the Oscar shortlist.

    Honorable Mention for Exceptional Direction: Léa Mysius for Ava (France)

    The John Schlesinger Award
    Brimstone and Glory (U.S./Mexico), directed by Viktor Jakovleski

    Cine Latino Award
    Killing Jesús (Colombia/Argentina), directed by Laura Mora
    Honorable Mention: A Fantastic Woman (Chile), directed by Sebastián Lelio

    HP Bridging the Borders Award
    The Insult (Lebanon), directed by Ziad Doueiri
